We live in a time when the packaging is more important than its content. This metaphoric description can be used to explain almost any part of our everyday life. Even if you are unsure of what package you choose to present yourself in, the media will reassure you, fictitious or authentic, you must fit in one box or the other.
Today, many stories about success are related to fictive jobs of no real value, and the standard of beauty only relate to material goods. Everything that is considered as beautiful can be bought; including looks, body shape, general lifestyle and even your position in society. This kind of distorted perception has put an enormous burden on women, who today, have many more aspirations than only looking beautiful.
Just a few years ago the standard of beauty was a skinny model-looking body with no womanly attributes. Today society has created a fanatic, and the rule of virtue now connects to curvy, sometimes even exaggerated body form. Again, the package is essential, not the content.
Meanwhile, our culture is experiencing a paradigm shift of tribes of women soaring in entrepreneurship. Women whose stories, if written for them would've become statistics, not bosses. Women like Karen Civil, Raynell Steward, and Ronnessa Brown who decided to write their own stories and build their lane.
Looking at what society has been teaching us about beauty, it`s sad but true to say that some of the most beautiful women in the world are not the ones who are shown admiration. Their beauty is in their strength and intrinsic power, and their most beautiful accessory is an invisible crown earned by the ability to overcome every obstacle and challenge in life, no matter how hard it was. These are the women's stories I choose to circulate.
I choose these women because of the young women who are coming after me, I choose these women because their stories ignite my superpowers, I choose these women because their truths are mirrors for many of us, I choose these women because they didn't allow their past to hinder their future. Women like Phyllis Kendrick-Hale, Annie Malone, Michele Obama, Madame C.J.Walker, Oprah and Maya Angelo and many more.
This is not to say that such women do not show up in great packaging, (e.g., beautiful, curvy or skinny women). Their beauty lies in the ability to move away from the things that don`t entirely fulfill them; from half-relationships, frustrating jobs, dishonest friends, and people who only abuse their love and energy. They would never trade their dignity for "likes".
To understand this unconventional and immaterial beauty, one needs to be able to observe from a distance and to listen with empathy because a beautiful, strong woman will recognize even the smallest signs of insincerity. She has seen such insecurities within herself and decided to deal with them head-on. She doesn`t want friends who will be intimidated by her will to fight and overcome the hard times, but ones who will stand by her side and fight with her for all women. That is the real beauty of the woman- the one that stands still, no matter the storm.
